Westark Area Council Climbing Program

Young people today seek challenges. Climbing and rappelling activities offer them worthy opportunities to learn new skills, test themselves, and have a terrific time. Its hard to top the satisfaction of climbing a rock face, rappelling down a steep pitch, or shooting down a zip line.

The Westark Area Council offers all of these opportunities through its Climbing programs. The climbing tower and Copperhead Cave at Camp Orr, along with numerous local and regional natural climbing areas, and an enthusiastic and well trained staff await to help you make these adventures a reality.

Instructor in Training training (IIT Training) March 6-8 - This is for the person who would like to take their unit on a climbing / rappelling high adventure. We equip the participants with the knowledge and expertise to take their unit out.  We train on both natural rock and the tower.  Subjects include safety, safety, and a little more safety, along with anchor points, the proper way to ‘rig’ a site, ropes and equipment, and Climb on Safely.

This is a 2 weekend course and participants MUST attend both sessions: March 6-8 is the learning and book phase of the training.  March 27-29 is the practical phase of the training.  ITT’s will be running the sites at Spring Climb-O-Ree (under the watchful eyes of experienced instructors and directors.

Good (not great) physical condition is needed.  Some experience on rope is very advisable, knowledge of all the knots is not necessary – we’ll teach you. A current physical is required.  Age 16 to 18 can train as IIT’s, 18 and above can become Level I Instructors.

Spring Climb-O-Ree  March 27-29  This fun-filled, challenging, high adventure weekend is for units that wish to have the Thrill of Victory.  We start all on smaller easily managed short tower rappels and climbs.  It progresses to the Ultimate – Gar Hole – a 265 foot rappel.  We even do night rappels on the tower.  Of course, ALL BSA Safety precautions are strictly enforced.
